The death of the Runaí of Mallow GAA Club Eugene Carey on 5th December 2007 has deprived Mallow of one of it’s best known and most colourful characters. Club Secretary since 2004, Eugene’s unique contribution to the club cannot be underestimated and his contribution was instrumental in the move from Carhookeal to the great complex we have here in Carrigoon.
His passing at the age of 52 shocked his many friends and colleagues, who knew him as a man full of life and one who had bravely fought his serious illness with good humour to the end. Born and bred in Mallow and a past pupil of St. Colmans College in Fermoy, Eugene qualified as a solicitor in 1977, working in West Cork before returning to Mallow to Richard Moylan & Co. in 1982. From there he left in 1995 to establish his own firm which he developed into a thriving practice specialising in litigation and in particular road traffic matters.
A man of boundless energy, enthusiasm, charm and love of the GAA, especially hurling, Eugene could often be heard to say that Munster Final day in Thurles was the best day in any man’s life.
Eugene founded the Mallow GAA Golf Classic which provided valuable annual funding to the Club and brought an array of stars over the years from the worlds of entertainment, sport and politics to Mallow Golf Club each year. Those who had no choice but to adhere to his constant requests to attend include Michael Lyster, DJ Carey, Alan Ball, Babs Keating and Sean Kelly to name but a few.
A keen golfer and supporter of his beloved Manchester City, Eugene’s heart was in Mallow GAA and played no small part in ensuring that our fine venue is what it is today. While Eugene was alive to see the building completed and opened in 2007 he would dearly have loved to have been present here for this tournament, entertaining as only he could with stories and pride in “his” Club.
Cinnte, ní fheicimid a leitheid arís.
