Congratulations to Mallow’s own Sean Hayes who lined out with the Cork Minor Hurlers against Kerry on last Wednesday 9th April.  While it was a comprehensive 5-26 to 0-09 win for the Rebels, it was great to see Sean’s sharp shooting in action.  He scored 6 points, 5 of which were from placed balls. Sean was always been a dedicated player and has spent long years honing his craft.  He is proof that talent and hard work will reap rewards. Also on the extended panel was Alec Luttrell who along with Sean has been working hard to earn that coveted Cork jersey.  Alec had been injured of late so couldn’t be considered for the opening clash but keep an eye out because he is sure to feature in the Cork set up in the near future.  Keep up the good work lads!
Easter Camp! Mallow Juvenile GAA Club will hold an Easter Hurling & Football Camp for primary school boys and girls over the holidays.  The 3 day camp begins on Tuesday 22nd April at 10.00am and runs each day until 2.00pm. We would ask all children to bring runners, a packed lunch, plenty of water and most importantly a MOUTHGUARD!  The cost is €30 per child and booking and inquiries can be made to our wonderful coaching officer Wayne O Donnell on 085-1562189.

Mallow were unlucky not to top the group as there were chances that were missed by literally inches.  Some consolation for the boys is that they beat the group winners and gave a great account of themselves and we’re all very proud of ye! And now it back to grindstone, Under 14 football training will take place on Saturday morning 10.00am-11.00am. Meanwhile the under 14 hurlers will play Newtownshandrum tonight (Thursday) at 7.00pm in Mallow. Best wishes to our 14 players who will take part in regional competitions next week.  The hurlers will play on Monday and it’s the turn of the footballers on Thursday.  Go n-eiri libh!
Our minor hurlers have gotten their 2014 campaign underway.  Saturday saw them play the mighty Youghal.  It was a game in which we never really hit top gear and were beaten by the better team.  They bounced back but were then pipped at the post in their second league game this year.   They played St. Colmans (which is an amalgamation of Cloyne and Russell Rovers) on Monday and it was a high scoring cracker of a game.  The final score was Mallow 4-11 St. Colmans 3-16.  Upward and onward lads as our first championship game versus Midleton is pencilled in for 27th April.  Confirmation of time and venue will be in next week’s notes.

Fr O’Neill’s 2-10

A DIRTY night for football in Ballincollig, but that didn’t stop Mallow and Fr O’Neill’s delivering an open and honest Rebel Óg Premier Minor 2 Football Championship opener.
The Avondhu outfit prevailed in the finish, principally down to their clinical haul of three goals in the first half, which propelled them into a 3-3 to 0-5 advantage which O’Neill’s could never catch. Cork minor hurler Seán Hayes was the star performer in that period, smashing in two powerful goals, and a monster point from play.
He also lorded the midfield exchanges, with Mallow enjoying the monopoly of possession and they could have been further in front but for seven first-half wides, while Fr O’Neill’s didn’t have any. Aaron Woods was their playmaker in chief on the 40, while centre-back Alex Luttrell, another Cork minor hurling panellist, was using his physicality tellingly.
Speedy corner-forward Kevin Taylor pounced for the third goal, and even though Killian Broderick and Kevin O’Sullivan hit two points each for the East Cork outfit in the first half, it was looking grim at the break.
On the restart Hayes, a free, and Mark Kenny, pointed to stretch the Mallow advantage to three goals, but Fr O’Neill’s, when all hope appeared lost, dragged themselves back into contention with a point from sub Colm Swayne and a fine goal from another Cork minor, Billy Dunne, set up by David O’Driscoll.
Dunne, who ran tirelessly throughout, and O’Driscoll were real threats up top for O’Neill’s, while Deccie Dalton thundered into the game at midfield, with Eoin Motherway grafting hard too.
A score from sub Anthony Bowles relieved the pressure on Mallow, making it 3-6 to 1-7, but O’Neill’s were relentless and efforts from Swayne, O’Driscoll and a boomer from Dalton, trimmed the margin to just two with 10 minutes remaining.
Mallow keeper Kevin Doyle had already denied Broderick in the final quarter, before a fine block from corner-back Trevor McEvoy stopped a certain O’Driscoll goal. The North Cork side then steadied the ship, as a Hayes free – after the stylish Woods was fouled – was followed by scores from Taylor and Woods. Five points in arrears with time running out, an O’Driscoll run did yield a goal for Dalton, but referee Joe Larkin blew his whistle soon after.
A decent advert for football, especially in the conditions, and O’Neill’s could still make a mark through the backdoor, even if hurling is their priority; Mallow march on with room for improvement, but real potential.

The Under 16 hurlers played Sarsfield at home on Friday evening.  Fortune did not favour the North Cork men and we were beaten by 4 points.  The final score was Mallow 2-08 Sars 2-12.
It was good news for the Under 13 hurlers who were up against Ballygarvan on Wednesday night at home.  The decision was taken at congress that there would be no championship at this age group in 2014 so this is the only competition for the boys this year and they acquitted themselves admirably.  The final score was Mallow 2-10 Ballygarvan 3-03.
On Monday 12th May the summer training panels of 48 will be named for U14, U15, U16 and U17 football and hurling. Our coaches and players have been putting in a huge effort to break into these squads and have attended trials and camps in recent weeks. This hopefully means a number of Mallow players are in contention for spots on these panels so watch this space!
