Final game of the year for our Hurlers.

The final adult game of 2015 has come and gone, last Saturday, in the shape of a County Division 2 Intermediate Hurling League Final against County Intermediate Hurling Champions Charleville. The stark difference between a team 2 weeks out of Championship and ourselves, 6 weeks since Newcestown game, was evident and under wet heavy conditions the fitter team were always going to come out on top! Charleville had the best possible start and really dominated the game from the whistle, while Mallow found it hard to settle into the game. Charleville had 1-2 to 0-0 on the board within the opening minutes and it was only after seven minutes and a huge Padge Buckley save that Mallow found a score from corner forward Aaron Sheehan who repeated that task again after eleven minutes and was involved in Sean Hayes making it three points. Charleville at this stage had found the net again and were nine points adrift after sixteen minutes of play

Mallows first goal came from the Hurl of full forward Sean Hayes and to be fair to Hayes and Sheehan they were keeping Mallow in the game, even if the difference was ten points at the short whistle on a score line of Mallow 1-5 Charleville 2-12. Despite the deficit, though, our lads never laid down with the likes of Minor Paul Lyons, Captain Fionn O'Neill, Killian O'Connor, Daniel Sheehan and the aforementioned Sean Hayes and Aaron Sheehan all fighting hard to bridge the gap. Charleville, though, were always a step ahead and we seemed to work a lot harder for our scores than they did. Even though we had two 21 yard free's and some opportunities to raise a few more white flags it's doubtful whether we would have come close enough to turn the game on its head. Instead the full time score read Mallow 2-12 Charleville 2-21. Despite the disappointment of losing the final the already promoted Hurlers had a very fine year indeed and have done huge work over a very short period. Beaten in a County Semi Final by eventual County Champions Newcestown and promotion to Division 1 was a fantastic start to, hopefully, a fruitful number of years for these fine bunch of lads!! To the management, selectors and backroom teams of Joe Buckley, Dermot O'Riordan, John Foley, Barney O'Connor as well as stats man Ray Cosgrave, Hurling rep John O'Connell and Masseur Paddy Buckley we say a big thank you on a great year. All our players will take a well earned rest now in the coming months before it all begins again in early January.. MaghEalla Abu!!!
