Club Notes September 8th

Congratulations to Mallow's Intermediate Camogie players when they ripped up the form book to dispense of a fancied Tracton side in last Saturday's County Semi-final replay in Castle Road, Mahon. A superior performance from a well balanced side earned themselves a place in the County final against Fr O'Neills in a fortnight with the fixture yet to be confirmed. Marshaled by Captain Kathleen O'Brien Mallow provided a great display with fine performances by Cork Minor Katie Buckley, Cork Senior Michelle Browne, Aoife O'Rourke, Jane Fitzpatrick and Bronagh Ganley to name but a few. They ran out winners with a score-line of Mallow 2-09 Tracton 2-07. Details of the final to follow and Mallow GAA club would hope that all in town will get behind the girls..

Otherwise all is relatively quiet on the playing fields with the Intermediate footballers training hard at the moment in their preparation for their meeting with either Nemo Rangers or Bantry all to be decided after the All Ireland Football final...

Mallow GAA would like to wish all the best to club member Kevin Sheehan in the upcoming All Ireland Minor Football final and also to Colin O'Sullivan from Clyda Rovers...
The best of luck, of course, is extended to all local lads Colm ONeill, Aidan Walsh, Paudie Kissane, Ray Carey and Paul O'Flynn in the impending Senior Football All Ireland Final.. Mallow GAA would also hope local business, schools and residents will get behind both teams by showing their Cork colors in the upcoming days!!!

The club are having a big clean up above in Carrigoon next Monday night ahead of the 24hr Hurling Marathon in aid of the friends of Mallow hospital and we are all meeting at 6:30pm so please attend. Incidentally a big best of luck to Peter Barry who has been nominated from the club to be Mallows hurler in the marathon with Kevin Macarthy as replacement should the need arise..

Mallow GAA would like to extend it's deepest sympathies to the family of Conor Counihan, whose brother died in the last few days, also the late Patsy Hassett who died recently. May they rest in peace...

Club News:
The juvenile club have done the club proud this week. The U12 beat Dromtariffe last Wednesday evening and they now qualify for the County A Championship. The U16 beat Watergrasshill in the first round of the County C Championship. In an exciting match, the teams couldn’t be separated at full time. The match went to extra time. Both teams were score for score during the nail biting extra time. But it was a victorious goal from Mallow that now see them progress into the quarter final. Well done to all the girls and their mentors.

Mallow U11 North Cork Final Replay

On last Sunday morning on a well laid out Buttevant pitch Mallow and Newtownshandrum met for the 4th time this year. This match was played like all the other 3 games and it was fast and furious for the opening ten minutes. There was nothing between the sides and point for point was scored all the ways to half time with great individual battles and great hurling being played throughout the field. Newtown led at the half way stage by 1 point.

The second half was as exciting with only a point between the sides until 5 mins left when Newtown hit a purple patch and scored 3 unanswered goals, 2 of which would grace any final at any age. Hard as mallow tried and they played right till the end they had to bow to Newtown’s ability to carry the ball and get scores at the crucial time. Congratulations to Newtown on their great win but also great credit must be given to Mallow who once again did us all proud and will give us many great days out over the coming years.

Match Reports

U-21 Hurling
In the U-21 A North Cork hurling Championship tie last Saturday a spirited, though reduced in numbers, Mallow side took on a very sharp and well balanced Milford outfit in Charleville and to be honest Mallow trailed for much of the game. Through injury, holidays and absenteeism Mallow were down a few of their top players and sharp shooters. That said one or two player's do not make a team and the fifteen that lined out were as capable as any of the players in the club. Milford appeared that bit stronger especially up forward and at half time Mallow were trailing by twelve points which is an uphill battle for any side. Those who played well were Tadgh O'Keeffe Gerry Hayes, Kevin Sheehan, Adrian O'Reilly and Matty Taylor. Mallow rallied somewhat in the second half but couldn't reduce the deficit and the final score in a rain drenched Charleville was Mallow 1-09 Milford 3-15...

Junior Hurling Hurling
The Junior hurlers good fortune continues apace and in a very tough workout they drew with Newtownshandrum, last Wednesday 7th July away, fifteen points apiece.. Fourth game now unbeaten!!

Intermediate Football
On Thursday evening last the Intermediate footballers travelled to Mayfield in the Kelleher shield and they were also missing some key players. In awful conditions the final score there was Mallow 0-06 Mayfield 0-08...

Mallow's Junior hurlers continue to impress with another fine display last Wednesday evening(30th) against Charleville. It was another well balanced performance in a wet and windy Charleville. It must be said, overall, the fifteen Mallow men worked tirelessly throughout and to single out Brian O'Riordan, Brian Murphy, Conor Hannon, Jimmy Glynn, Barry John Ryan all registered fine performances. The final score here was Mallow 2-12 Charleville 2-08. They now have one league game left, ahead of next round championship, which is this Wednesday(7th) away to Newtownshandrum.

Congratulations to Katie Buckley of our club who put in a fine performance for the Cork Minor Camogie squad who had a comprehensive win over Wexford last week in their first round championship outing. Also to Kevin Sheehan, of our club, who now has a Munster Minor football medal after their win over Kerry on Sunday in Fitzgerald's stadium Killarney with a score-line of Cork 1-08 Kerry 1-07. We would like to thank very sincerely to all those who contributed in either entering a team or sponsoring a green/tee box. We know, in these times, its not easy parting with our hard earned money but we think it goes to show the lengths people will go to show their love of GAA and their club. A big thanks must go to club secretary Nuala Murphy who is the driving force behind the classic and would undoubtedly not have been half as successful without her...

Mallow u11's Report.

On Sunday last at 1 o’clock (04/07/10) our u11 hurlers travelled to Ballyhea to again take on the rivals Newtownshandrum for the third time this year. With the count of one win each and the north cork championship final at stake a great tussle was anticipated. The two teams didn’t disappoint and a great match was played at a great tempo. The scoring was low as the hooking and blocking was seen to great effect. At half time mallow led by 1 point and were facing a strong breeze in the second half. Newtown started the second half with all guns blazing and rattled off 4 unanswered points. Mallow missed a few chances at this stage to claw things back and great credit was due to them as they never stopped attacking and got there reward with a goal in the dying minutes to bring thing level again and this ended the match with a draw a fair result. Again against all the odds these young lads have done us proud.

Mallow Team on the day was :
Goal Eoin Buckley
Full Back Line Oisin Moynihan, Ben slattery and Eoin O'Leary.
Half Backs David Nyhan, Mathew Mcglynn (CAPT) and Sean Woulfe.

U11 Report.

There was a 3 way play off in the U11 North Cork hurling championship as Mallow / Newtown and Charleville as all 3 teams finished with two wins after the round robin league.

So on Saturday(26/06/10) last we travelled to Doneraile again take on Newtown which was now a semi-final match.

U11 V Newtown

Mallow started strongly and went a goal ahead after 5 mins but Newtown who had something to prove after Mallow had beaten them last week and got on top in almost all areas ,all the ways to half time and went in up 5 points. Hard as Mallow tried in the second half they could not break through the determined Newtown backs who eventually took control and ran out easy winners and booked their place in the final.

As it was a 3 way tie in the round robin league Mallow had a second bite of the cherry against Charleville on Monday night (28/06/10) which would determine the other finalist to get another crack at Newtown.

U11 V Charleville

This game was played on a perfect Buttevant pitch and started off with both sides playing excellent hurling and level at a goal apiece after 10 mins. Mallow at this stage took over and with positional changes made from the Newtown match, a better balanced mallow team added to their advantage and led at the interval by 7 points. The second half was evenly balanced with mallow getting the better of a solid comeback by Charleville only in the last few minutes. Mallow ran out worthy winners by 9 points and booked a rematch with Newtown in the north cork final this weekend time venue and date to be confirmed. Well done to all the players as they did the club proud.

The 2007 Intermediate Football Final, played against Killavullen, was without doubt one of the highlights of the year gone by. To commemorate this fantastic win, a dvd of that special occasion is now available. How many times in the past have players and supporters lamented the fact that no record of great wins remain? This special dvd is available from the team manager, Ronan Sheehan, at a special price of 20 Euro. Ronan can be contacted at 086 1522256. A limited supply of these dvds is available and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

We are affiliated to the Cork County Board and participate in Avondhu League and Championship. Our most notable success was County Football Champions in 2003 at U12 level. In 2004 we won 10 North Cork Titles and were runners up in 4 more.

We also host a hurling and football blitz during the summer months with invited teams and run a summer camp. This year our Summer Camp was co-ordinated by Inter County players Tom Kenny & Conor McCarthy. Many of our juvenile players have gone on and represented their division and county teams at all levels.
